According to the National Eye Institute, millions of Americans experience a hindrance to their vision or common dry-eye disease in their lifetime, particularly in older patients and women. Due to hormonal changes and longer life spans, women are more predisposed to eye diseases that cause their vision to vary more as they age.

Wang Vision Institute in West End has been a source of eye care in Nashville, which aims to fully address men's and women’s different visual needs. Refractive surgeries include any operations used to correct a patient's nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) or SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), which reshape the cornea.

These procedures can help male and female patients attain improved, natural vision at any point in their adult lives. 

Dry eye disease can indicate a deficiency in either water or oil — some patients do not produce enough tears, while other patients have blocked oil glands in their eyelids and their tears quickly evaporate. A lack of tears and oil means that the eyes don’t lubricate enough, causing discomfort (notably when wearing contact lenses).

At a mild level, patients can use artificial tears or consistent eyelid hygiene to moisten their eyes, yet these at-home methods are not strong enough for every case. Wang Vision offers select non-surgical procedures to combat dry eye. Though they are options for all patients, Kyle recommends a few specifically for women with severe symptoms. Punctal plugs are small devices placed in the tear ducts in the corner of the eye, allowing tears to drain more easily.  Dr. Ming Wang, who founded Wang Vision, also patented an amniotic membrane to smooth an irritated cornea. These bandages sit in the eye to reduce inflammation and dissolve in two days.

Both of these procedures are covered by most Tennessee insurance plans, according to Kyle.

The most elective of these procedures is Thermal Pulsation. With this method, doctors use heat and massage therapy to let out trapped oils. Insurances consider this procedure to be elective.
