For all the fashionable fellas out there, we’ve got some exciting news! An acclaimed men’s store just landed in the 12South neighborhood, with praise from the likes of GQ and Esquire. STAG Provisions is a multi-brand retail space that specializes in contemporary clothing with classic roots. We got to meet with Co-Owner, Steve Shuck, to learn more about this successful and stylish shop.

Nfocus: Who is your typical client? Who shops at Stag Provisions?

Steven Shuck: Kind of everybody. We want to be a little something for everyone, not everything for someone. We don’t have this narrow thing for one guy and only he can wear it and everyone is excluded from that. We want to keep things that are in fashion, but we don’t follow trends. If a guy is going to invest in something from us, we want it to feel at home in his closet five years from now as it does today.

Nfocus: Why Nashville?

Steve Shuck: Nashville has been on our radar for a really long time. When we look at places to consider it's always about where we already have customers. We get tons of customers, celebrity and non, who come through Austin who live here in Nashville, and of our online customers Nashville is always in the top 10.

Nfocus: What is a brand that you’ve had since the beginning and what is a newer brand you're excited about?

Steve Shuck: Double RL is a brand we’ve had since we opened. When we opened we were one of the eight wholesaler accounts they had in the United States. That’s a brand that has been with us and is a part of our DNA. We’ve done some special collaboration collections with them too. We have our 15 year anniversary coming up in Fall, and they're doing a special jacket just for us. Save Khaki is a brand that does really simple cotton basics. What makes them special is they make everything soft and it’s entirely made in the US. That is a brand that’s been with us since the beginning as well.

One brand that is newer to us is Kapital, which is a Japanese brand that’s been around since the 70’s. They have a very tight distribution of maybe ten accounts in the U.S. They do this twist on American workwear. Also newer to us in the last 3-4 years is a brand called Portuguese Flannel. It’s a fourth generation shirt making family. Obviously, what they’re most known for is their flannels, which are buttery soft. You’ll see tons of that here in the Fall and Winter. They just do great easy to wear pieces any man can wear… he could be 22 or 72 and it’s going to work for him. That is a brand we really love and believe in.

Nfocus: Could you tell us a little bit more about your business partnership?

Steve Shuck: I came in from corporate retail. I was with Gap for 16 years and was running global operations for the brand. I wanted to do something smaller, something more entrepreneurial, which is what brought me from San Francisco to Austin. My business partner, Don Weir, was in the antique world and was working with a couple different places in Austin. Our visions match for what we both wanted to do. We wanted to do a menswear store because there was a void in Austin at the time for multi-line retail.

Nfocus: Do you ever do special collaborations?

Steve Shuck: We have a few things! We carry Levi’s garments, but the embroidered designs are from a brand out of Austin called Fort Lonesome. It’s a group of women who use old hand crank chain stitch machines. We have been working with imogene + willie for 15 years. We kind of grew up together. We were their very first wholesale account. They design some t-shirts just for us. We always try and have some exclusivity on things, but it’s just us trying to build things you may not find other places that we gravitate toward. If we don’t love it, you’re not going to find it here. We never buy things because we know it will do well. We are going to buy things because we think it’s cool and we love it, and we think our customers will too.
