Clare Levy's startup clothing enterprise, Nighty, doesn't have a website. Someday the fledgling nightgown designer will launch an online retail presence, but for now — like the old-school modest sleepwear Clare’s designing — Nighty keeps a modest profile.

But news of the comfort and quality of nightgowns like your grandmother used to wear has spread quickly. Word-of-mouth has fueled a quiet but quite energetic launch of the sleepwear brand that is equal parts nostalgia and next-best-thing.

“Nighty is a love letter to my grandmother, an ode to all the grandmothers and their way of sleeping,” says Clare, a mother of three young children. “They didn’t just throw on a T-shirt.”

The key to Nighty’s product line is the breathable, lightweight and laundry-friendly material: 100%-organic cotton from India. Using a vintage nightgown from her own grandmother as a template, Clare started sketching designs with pen and paper and sending them to India, where a family-owned business translates her drawings into prototypes.

The first collection includes seven styles, with various cuts of collar and sleeve and embellishments, such as whimsical embroidery and lace detail. Designed for loose-fitting comfort, the gowns come in two sizes — small-medium and large-extra-large — in colorways of pearl, cornflower, peach, raspberry and butter.

Clare recently traveled to Paris, France, to source vintage robes to accompany her gowns, and she’s looking forward to debuting her newest shipment from India at a pop-up sale on April 30. Check Instagram for details, at @Good___Nighty. (That’s three underscores.)

Expect a dainty truckload of breezy vestments embroidered with animals, flowers and lucky symbols. Named for mothers and grandmothers of Clare and her friends, the Nighty line is homage to generations of beloved women and, Clare says, “a reminder of how to find beauty in the little things."
