Just when you start to think everything under the sun is the same, predictable and manufactured by machine, you stumble across a place like Potluck Teahouse.

Owner Devin Komline bills his two-room storefront on the East Side as “Nashville’s only pottery studio-teahouse,” and whether or not there’s another venue that serves Earl Grey with a side of wet clay, Potluck Teahouse is a refreshing one-of-a-kind resource for both caffeine and creativity.

Step inside the cozy, sunny boutique and ask yourself: Do I want to roll up my sleeves and make pottery, or do I want to settle down with a handmade teacup full of lapsang souchong and a pastry the size of pottery wheel?

Potluck offers both options. To the right is the tea counter; to the left is the maker space, with pottery wheels and kiln.

For a $125 monthly membership, Potluck pottery studio offers daily access from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., along with a personal shelf to store and display work, weekly firings in the kiln and discounted drinks. During open studio hours, $50 gets three hours of access to workspace, tools and material.

The adjacent dining space shares the handmade aesthetic of the studio, with seating handcrafted by Devin and shelves displaying a curated selection of clay creations from Potluck members. Devin, a Vermonter and former college golfer, crafts many of the teapots and vessels for sale. The tea counter offers a lengthy roster from High Garden Teas in black, green, herbal, oolong and white varieties.

Don’t be surprised if baker Teddy Washington of Sweethearts Bakery pitches up with his oversized sourdough cinnamon rolls or if the pastry case is filled with fresh, local scones, cookies and cake from Boo Gordon of @msboobakes.

You never what you’ll find on the Potluck calendar. September saw a makers’ market, quiet reading nights with local Novelette Booksellers, and a glazing workshop on mushroom-inspired ceramic wall art. October promises more unique opportunities for making, gathering and sipping. The sheer whimsy of the schedule will make you check the website and zany Instagram often for opportunities to try your luck at something different, unpredictable and handmade.
