21c Museum Hotels began with the goal of bringing contemporary art to a wider audience. With their first hotel in Louisville, KY the husband/wife team of Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown displayed pieces from their personal collection with the goal of welcoming guests with art that makes visitors feel represented and included. The galleries themselves are free and open to the public 24/7 with the exception of instances when the galleries are closed for private events. The art is meant to stir conversation and, at times, can challenge the viewer.

Known for their revolving collection of contemporary art, 21c Museum Hotels traditionally rotate exhibits between their 9 properties every twelve to eighteen months. After the pandemic shutdowns of 2020, the hotels delayed all exhibit installations and changes until accessibility reopened for travel.

On August 27, 21c Museum Hotel Nashville will unveil their newest exhibit - The Future is Female. Reflecting the ongoing influence of feminist art of the 1970’s, the exhibit will include over eighty works encompassing both nationally and locally renowned artists like; Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Jodi Hays, Benjy Russell and Vadis Turner. The new exhibit uses elevated everyday materials, methods, and experiences to challenge traditional notions and affirm the self as the subject. Many of the pieces in the exhibit utilize tactile methods such as sewing, weaving and embroidery to highlight and bring in to focus the influence of feminist art of the 1970’s.

“’The Future is Female’” first appeared during the 1970s on a t-shirt designed for a women’s bookstore in New York City,” says Chief Curator Alice Gray Stites. “Over the last few years, the phrase has re-emerged on clothing, social media, and various other platforms, reflecting and inspiring a reconsideration of what these terms—female, and future—mean. While acceptance of gender fluidity is greater today, inclusion and equal rights remain contentious and contested issues. The work of the artists featured in this exhibition envision resistance, transformation, and progress.”

The Future is Female will open to the public on Saturday, August 27 and will be on view at 21c Nashville through June 2023. This exhibit will be available in the Main Gallery of 21c and throughout galleries on the 1st and 2nd floor representing 10,000 square feet of exhibit space.
