“Cameras are great for recording an overall view, but they distort.” That thoughtful snapshot of creative wisdom comes from artist Renee Bates, a member of The Chestnut Group, who puts brush to canvas to capture the beauty of nature while supporting conservation organizations that preserve Middle Tennessee’s environment.

Founded in 2001, The Chestnut Group gathers artists to create works outdoors, in the French tradition of painting en plein air. The nonprofit showcases those works through nonjuried exhibitions, whose sales support efforts to protect land and historic places. Over 25 years, The Chestnut Group has directed approximately $500,000 to conservation-focused organizations, such as The Land Trust for Tennessee, Friends of Radnor Lake, Friends of Warner Parks, Friends of Shelby Park and Greenways for Nashville.

Raised in East Nashville and married to another Nashvillian, Renee calls herself a “unicorn.” She’s referring to her lifelong hometown status, but that rarity could equally apply to the unique skillset she’s brought to the Chestnuts for more than a decade, as a board member for six years and president for two. With a résumé that includes bookkeeping and interior design, along with working for Greenways and her family business, Bates Nursery & Garden Center, Renee combines a head for entrepreneurship, a heart for community and an eye for art and landscape.

“The Chestnut Group has benefited in countless ways from the way Renee has so, so generously shared her time, knowledge and skills with our group,” says fellow artist Ellen Parker Bibb. “Her positivity has attracted members and sponsors alike, and her determination has been an inspiration to me and many others.”

While Renee has helped grow the organization through fundraising, marketing and other leadership roles, The Chestnut Group has supported her growth as an artist. Working alongside fellow creatives and participating in the annual workshop series, Paint Your Heart Out, has built her confidence and skill, further fueling her involvement in the group.

“I want to see our partner art shows get even stronger — raise more funds for these nonprofit organizations who share like-minded goals in conservation and preservation,” Renee says. “The grassroots community creates impact united by art, volunteerism, preservation and conservation, demonstrating that local action can lead to lasting change. It’s a win all around.”
