There is no denying that the North Eastern United States has unparalleled natural beauty. Both the coastal regions of the state as well as the mountain ranges that draw the interest of naturalists and hikers. Whether visitors to Maine are looking for outdoor activities, are interested in learning more of the history of a young nation, or, like me, want to simply eat their weight in lobster and the cuisine of the North East region, Maine has that and so much more to offer.

For a weekend getaway, the coast of Maine offers a beautiful escape. Traveling from Boston or through New Hampshire offers a meandering route through the idyllic picturesque fishing villages of coastal Maine to arrive in Kennebunkport.

Founded in 1653, Kennebunkport is known for its beaches, famous residents and is a beloved spring, summer and fall getaway for many New Englanders. For first-timers to the area, Kennebunkport offers no shortage of inns, quaint hotels, dining and shopping.

Visitors can stop into the famous Mabel’s Lobster Claw for their robust Lobster Roll - cold with mayonnaise or hot with butter - paired with expertly prepared french fries and local brews and spend the rest of the day strolling the boutique and art gallery-lined streets or taking a walk on the scenic Ocean Avenue. Gracing the beginning of the avenue is The Colony Hotel which was built in 1914 and has been owned and operated by the same family since 1947. The Colony Hotel is also Maine’s first Green hotel. The winding, ocean-front path allows visitors to take in the beautiful architecture of stunning homes and also leads to the Bush family compound.

For a luxury experience visitors enjoy the White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection. This rustic inn offers guests a rare respite from the hustle and bustle of the city with adventures at the inn. Guests can enjoy wine and cheese pairing, cocktail classes, yoga, a spa and an incredible four-star dining experience at the White Barn. Dinner is composed of a chef’s tasting menu. Guests can enjoy a four-course dinner with everything from beef tartare and lobster bisque to Foie Gras encrusted filet mignon and lobster. All courses were paired with fantastic wines or cocktails in the beautiful setting.
