Homeowner Paige Kisber opens the front door of her stately updated Georgian home barefoot and dressed in a lightweight sweater and jeans. It is the perfect attire for a home she fittingly calls “warm and inviting.”
Once inside, steps lead up to a dining room framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on a landscaped backyard that includes a charming, re-imagined guest house. The 1920s structure was already there when Paige and her husband, Matt, purchased the property in 2009. They tore down the existing main house and rebuilt it but left the guest house.
The couple and their two children had previously been living in an older home on Sunnyside Drive in Belle Meade. While they had originally planned to renovate and enlisted the help of architect Van Pond, it was looking more and more difficult and cost prohibitive. In a collaborative effort between homeowners and architect, they adjusted the plans to accommodate a new build, and in doing so, instilled the character and integrity of an older house.
The result was a home with soaring ceilings, hardwood and tile floors and built-ins galore. One feature it does not have, however, is an open floor plan. “I like rooms,” says Paige. The 6,950-square-foot, 4 bedroom, 4 ½ bath home has sitting rooms, a media room, a home office, a chef’s kitchen and two laundry rooms. While all the family members have plenty of their own space because of the design of the house, Paige says “everybody is still close.” The guest house provides another 750 square feet with one bedroom, one bath, an upstairs loft, a kitchenette and a working fireplace.
