Ageless advice
Professionals dole out tips at the Young Collectors Soirée
Published On: March 02, 2010
When it comes to gorgeous antiques, it is never too soon to start building your own unique collection. This was definitely the school of thought at the Antiques and Garden Show Young Collectors Soirée. At a show this massive, it can be quite helpful to have a discerning eye or two to help narrow down potential purchases. Young Nashvillians gathered together to browse the variety of booths at this year's show, but with a little guidance.
Folks enjoyed a personally guided tour by a local legend with impeccable taste, Bobby McAlpine, and Veranda magazine's Editor-at-Large, Carolyn Englefield. Together, Bobby and Carolyn picked out a range of elegant and interesting pieces to discuss in front of the crowd. Bobby gave particular but practical advice on how to make certain pieces work with things you already own. With his captivating humor, Bobby kept the crowd laughing all evening as he dished out invaluable advice about art and design. When the group stopped at Nashville's own Robin Rains Antiques, Bobby pointed out the matching pair of crystal chandeliers, noting that these can dress up a room like "great jewelry." His tips just made plain sense. Carolyn's worldly expertise complimented Bobby's recommendations. Her knowledge of cutting-edge design enlightened and informed all in attendance. The combination of Bobby and Carolyn made for a great evening chock full of wisdom, humor and sensibility.
Co-chairs Brooke Sevier and Meg White did a fabulous job of keeping the vibe of the party laid-back and fun. No one went thirsty, as there were several open bars. A display of yummy cheese, dips, and crudités satisfied everyone. This event grows in popularity every year, and for good reason. Bobby and Carolyn's advice was a great tool to help navigate the sometimes-overwhelming selection of pieces. The timeless tips and cool crowd made for a breath of fresh air in this stuffy winter season. MM
