Intellectual Trends

Now that it's rainy season, one of my favorite things to do is read; yep, sit on the couch, lay in the bed, or lounge on the porch and get caught up in someone else's drama. I finished a novel about two weeks ago, and have been on the hunt for a new one ever since. Its never been hard for me to pick up a book and love what the cover has to say about it...until now. It seemed like every book I grabbed was about the same really cute, klutzy girl who loves to shop and sleep with 10 guys at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I already have a collection of these exact books in my home library. But after awhile, it begins to look as if current authors have seen a trend and are planning on riding it to death. Or, maybe they are just taking a clue from the latest Miss Teen South Carolina and seeing if beauty really does outweigh substance!
Sunset Grill closing?!

I just heard Sunset Grill is closing for lunch… something about building a gigantic parking garage on their existing lot. Anyone know anything about this? Where will I now find my lunchtime Sonoma salad?

It's definitely Golf season, with the Barclays in full force this week and the greens being trampled every weekend by adoring fans of the game. Who cares that the temperature is reaching way above the 100 mark, they go out and hit the ball with all their might, taking in the scenery as they watch the ball fly through the air. I'm really glad that they are able to play in such a beautiful setting. Really I am. But how about the water pressure in the Belle Meade area lately? Girls, have you noticed the shampoo isn't washing out quite as easily as it did a month ago?

The highest form of flattery

I've never been so flattered in my life! The Tennessean is taking up social coverage, and it is so cute. They went "behind the scenes" of a brand new fundraiser by interviewing the staff; then interviewed "socialite" Ellen Nelson, who is an absolute doll and one of the cleverest, most fun people in town. Also, one of the most benevolent, on behalf of her employer Lipman Bros., providing firewater to nearly every fundraiser inside and outside the city limits. I bet even she finds it hysterical that she was portrayed as the go-to "socialite." (A word, by the way, that most of those we cover eschew.)

Becoming tired of watching it rain on the carrots a Kroger, I decided to take one for the team and do my utmost to bring rain to each and every one of you... I bought a convertible! Prepare...It will start raining soon!

I enjoy having my coffee in the early morning on my front deck. The flowers are at their late summer best. The fountain trickles, and the blue morning glories have opened shop for the day. Dozens of hummers chatter and fuss, hoping I will go away, but hunger beats fear and they zip in for a sweet breakfast. The sun warms the herb pots and the smell of basil and mint drifts by. I spot last night's moths sleeping under the leaves of the caladiums. Small iridescent blue green dragonflies hunt for aphids on the petunias. This morning I count five different types of butterflies drifting from yellow lantana to red mandevilla then to scarlet and purple verbena blossoms.
School Returns Without Me

You know I'm starting to understand what my daddy was saying when he told me that growing up was a bitch a couple of months ago. For the first time in my life, I'm completely independent. No more allowance, but what's even more sad about growing up is that school is starting on Monday without me. I am a May graduate of Ole Miss, and the fall semester is just around the corner. That's insane!

I am going to Kroger today and stand in the produce section, so I can hear thunder and see lightning, followed by rain...
SECRETS!

Secrets! We love them, don't we? That is... if they do not belong to us. With this idea in mind, Frank Warren brings us postsecret: a website dedicated to the sharing of secrets. The effects of which are two-fold: entertainment for the reader, and therapy for those using the forum to "unload". Some are touching, some are disturbing, some are simply entertaining. I discovered the site a few years ago and check it once a week (new posts are added on Sundays) or so. In a society of voyeurs, this site touches on all ends of the spectrum of human experience and allows for the anonymity of the contributers. Check it out. It never hurts to have a window into someone else's experience. http://postsecret.blogspot.com/
Coming Back Down to Earth

For those of you who have read the articles in CNN Money, and heard the press conference with George W. Bush today, you'll know that the US, and indeed the world, is focusing on mortgages and the economy. Banks are declaring bankruptcy, people are panicking, and many are asking the President to dish out money to those who can no longer afford their homes. I have to ask...what are these people smoking?!
Stress Relief

Ok, I need a massage. Not just your run-of-the-mill generic Swedish massage either. I need a pain-enducing, leaving bruises on my shoulders to work out the kinks kind of rub down. Know of a place that can handle that? I've been all over the city it seems, but for some reason these professionals seem a bit timid. Or maybe I'm just going places for people who like to be pampered...but I need medical help here! Too much stress and the muscles in my neck and shoulders become one big mess. This could definately put a damper on my weekend plans.
