Life Without Cable

Posted by Mandi Coleman (04.09.08, 8:39 AM)

It really is amazing what you can accomplish when Comcast screws up and shuts your cable down a week early. Yesterday I had called to have the service transfered next Monday to my new address, but apparently there was a mix-up and they shut it down that same day. After frantically calling their support line (American Idol was on and Jason Castro happened to be singing my favorite song), they informed me that I would have to have a technician come and hook everything back up. Obviously I wasn't going to go through that hassle for less than a week of TV, so I set about doing everything around the house that I never do because I'm glued to the television.

Don't get me wrong, I am not one to plop on the couch after work and stay there until I feel the need to sleep. But the few hours a night I do stare mindlessly at the screen turned very productive as I packed, cleaned, and even read a few books that I've been waiting to find the time for. Maybe today I'll make a list of everything I can accomplish this evening!

I bet we would all be much better off if we learned to turn that thing off more often. Just think of all the time we spend staring at this box, it's kind of sad to think that our children are loosing their imaginations because they don't have to use one they can just turn on the tv and be entertained for hours and hours. What about reading and playing outside with other children. And not just children either adults spend all of their free time staring at this box also. Why don't we go for a walk, read a good book or better yet "The Good Book" Get some fresh air...It's sad really that we as a country have turned into a bunch of overweight couch potatoes and so have our children.

I've been trying to read the final Harry Potter book for about 3 months but keep getting distracted by every reality show. Especially the Hills!

AMEN! I agree I think instead of TV we should call it the "stupid box." Our children are becoming a generation of ADD couch potatoes. They are so used to get all information so quickly and easily from the "stupid box" that most don't know the joy of reading a book or fresh air. Imagine that actually spending the energy to go outside and play. Now that is a radical idea!!! We should all put down the remote and get up and get moving. We don't do that nearly enough!!! Myself included!!!
