Tennessee's Finest

Posted by Mandi Coleman (09.17.07, 8:39 AM)

This weekend a big group of friends went to Centennial Park for the annual Walk for ALS. As we rounded our first corner in the park, taking in the hungry ducks in the pond and the absolutely amazing flowers, we noticed that sitting along the bank of the "lake" were both men and boys...fishing. Is that even legal?

These guys, clad in baseball caps and stocked up on Kroger brand coke, had cast their fishing lines along the man-made pond and were taking it easy on a Saturday morning. I guess they thought it was the most normal event in the world to catch fish in the middle of the city as people strolled by gawking at the spectacle they had created. I laughed for an entire lap of the park, after someone beside me so eloquently described the scene as this entry's subject.

I'm confused by this? Is their a problem spending "father/son" bonding time while fishing in a park?

I guess you don't get to the park much. Likely the large group of walkers was more of a "spectacle" since there are people fishing there all the time.

I see people fishing there all the time - it's a pond - there are fish in it...and yes it's legal and not a 'spectacle' at all.

I have been there numerous times, and I thought the pond was there for looks? Go fish in a real lake. I saw someone doing this in a pond at a golf course one time. I laughed out loud

I agree with Holly. The only bonding that is going on in that park is the father showing the son some redneck weekend activities. I love fishing...off a pier! Take your fold up chairs and your RC cola and find a nice little spot where the fish haven't been placed there by the city.

Holy snobfest folks. Give the people a break - they just wanted to do a little fishing. Who the heck are you to be so uppity about where people fish? They weren't doing anything wrong and I think Percy Priest is a 'man made' lake - is it weird if people want to fish from the bank there too? And since when is fishing a redneck activity? I really don't understand what's so funny about what they are doing or the need to make fun of them at all. I enjoy reading this blog from time to time but sometimes the shallowness on here is scary.

Bewildered, thank you for your opinion. But I believe that Mandi didn't say anything was wrong with fishing. I think that she, like most people, just thought it a little out of the ordinary for people to cast their reel in a lake that may or may not even have fish in it. What is shallow about that? At least she was supporting a good cause with friends this weekend.

like most people

Never met anybody that knew "most people" before.

Hey, maybe people would be more accepting of her opinion on the oddity if she hadn't decided to throw insults on top of it. Maybe it was a father who just wanted to spend a little time with his kid and was prevented from fishing with him in a convenient or "normal" manner by a vindictive ex or something.

remember that there are plenty of inner city kids who have never seen any body of water any bigger than Centennial Park`s Lake Watagua..better to be out fishing than playing video games or wandering the streets and malls..there is a fishing tournament for children at that lake every year and yes the lake is stocked with fish.I caught my first fish there over 40 years ago. It`s nice to know the lake and the park are being used as intended..I remember when it would have been crazy to take a child there because it was a hang out for men seeking to hook up with other men in the restrooms and in their cars parked along side the lake..day and night...
there are some great things posted on this blog that usually draw little if any comment...I don`t see what the fuss is about at all...

ARGH!!! None of you get it! The fact that you don't see anything wrong with what you are saying is scary. You don't get it and you never will.

I have a couple of concerns. First, I've read a few of Mandi's so called articles and they all portray her as a very shallow person. The subjects can barely be called subjects, they have no depth, are very self-absorbed, and poorly written. Second, I feel sad for someone that gets a laugh out of another person's happiness. Mandi's life is extremely influenced by others and she gets ahead by riding other's coattails.

Ouch - harsh. Perhaps we all need to practice a little more tolerance and compassion.

I am somewhat confused by "had to say somethings comments" First I would like to draw this persons attention to the fact that Mandi was in the park walking for the ALS Walk, that isn't exactly something I believe many shallow people do on their weekends. Secondly, you stated that "Mandi's life is extremely influenced by others and gets ahead riding other peoples coattails." Wow.. Those seem like some pretty personal attacks coming from someone who just had to say something about a blog. Maybe you should take a little time out for a relaxing fishing trip in the park yourself, you seem to be having a hard time putting things into perspective.

Mandi—I'm really proud of you for doing the ALS walk. I feel like a lazy slug for not being there. Plus, i saw nothing mean-spirited at ALL about Mandi's harmless observations. Does someone have an ax to grind?

I think that there are several people here who need to take a deep breath. To pass judgment on someone based on a few lines of copy in a blog is ridiculous. Personal attacks are not necessary or warranted. If you don't like Mandi's blog...don't read it!

I commend Mandi on taking her time out to do the ALS walk in the first place!

Tell that to the father and son she disparaged in her post. The ALS walk has nothing to do with it.

Oh for Goodness sake get over it! I don't see any names printed here regarding the father and son in the park therefore I don't think they were personally insulted by this blog. Lets find something new to bicker about already!
