Codependency Part II

Posted by John Denson (03.15.07, 7:24 PM)

To paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy, "You are a codependent if..."

1. A guy writes a column on people-pleasing, emails it to you with a tongue-in-cheek note saying: "I really, really, really hope you like it! If you don't I'll try to change it." And you reply how much you like it, and that he is liked, too - even special - and that everything will be all right. (You promise!)

2. You read a column on codependency, tear it out, 'make' your mother read it, and afterward she says "I need to save this for your Aunt Helen."

3. You are a longtime, active member in a 12-step program that concentrates on not being codependent; a friend emails you a column on that very subject, with a tongue-in-cheek note saying, "I really, really, really hope you like it! If you don't I'll try to change it," and you do not know what to do...

4. You write a column on people-pleasing, resulting in praise, misunderstanding, laughter, resentment, and ultimately feeling misunderstood - yet again; so you go online and write a follow-up to the column on a blog, hoping to clarify everything so people will 'get it,' resulting in their further enlightenment and you, of course, feeling better...

what i like best about this post is codependency isn't hyphenated.

As a fellow memeber of the not so exclusive club of codependants, I`m reallly, really sorry your are feeling so conflicted..I will spend the rest of the day trying to come up with a way to make everything all right for you because if everyone isn`t happy then I must be doing something wrong and I`m sure if I try just a little harder I can solve all of your problems and then we will all be one big happy family..because if you are happy then all of my problems will go away...and if I spend enough time worrying about other peoples problems then I won`t have to face mine....there there now..you feel better now don`t you??? DON`T YOU !

Dear COOK4MONEY,
Maybe some chicken soup would make you feel better, or soothing, hot tea. Maybe a cocktail like a Manhattan or a Fuzzy Navel. And a cigarette. Got any ludes? You could maybe do a few quaaludes and have a martini. (Screw the Manhattan.) Then maybe you will feel better. Oh, and when you do all this stuff, call me. I like a good cook when her goose is cooked!
