Sundays are by far my favorite day of the week. I take full advantage of the “easy like Sunday morning” mindset and usually don’t get out of bed until I’ve watched a movie and several different shows on the Food Network. If I’m feeling, ummm, a little rough, I always hit up a new brunch spot around town to help ease my pain. This past Sunday was no different—I had a fun day full of great food and slothful lounging. Which brings me to my latest mad obsession.
The Ramsey Pimento Cheese Burger at Burger Up.
Okay, I was a little late in visiting this new 12 South eatery, but I will most definitely make up for lost time. While I usually gravitate towards more traditional brunch spots on Sunday, my boyfriend and I were craving a big juicy burger to fill our bellies. This was my second trip of the weekend (don’t judge me) and I was dying for another taste. Of course, we got Bloodys, which I absolutely must have to make any Sunday complete. They were good, not great, and definitely not worth ten bucks. But, I’ll admit I’m a huge Bloody Mary snob. I like a highly specialized Bloody Mary, like made with tomatillo juice at Mercat a la Planxa in Chicago or the bacon Bloody Mary at Bar Pilar in DC. But I digress. I opted for the Ramsey Pimento Cheese Burger which was smothered in their homemade white cheddar pimento cheese and topped with their own pickles and red onion. Three words: to die for! The tart pimento cheese melted into this perfect creamy cloud while the pickles added a cool kick. The BF ordered chili cheeseburger (he puts chili on everything when he’s had a big night), and it was equally delicious. I highly recommend you substitute the regular fries with the truffled version. I am already looking at the menu online in preparation for my next visit.
Mad Obsession #2: Winnebago Man at the Belcourt
Normally I am not a fan of going to the movies. I get impatient after the first 30 minutes and I feel the compulsive need to shower as soon as I leave the theater. But, I had a large gift certificate to the Belcourt that I needed to use and the BF and I figured it would do us some good to get out after holing up all Sunday afternoon. Since we made the decision to go around 7 PM, our only film option was the 7:45 called Winnebago Man. We watched the trailer for the documentary and it looked half-decent, though I wasn’t expecting big things. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised. Immediately, the film’s subject, an irritated and bitter man doing an industrial video for the Winnebago Corporation, captured my full attention. The gist of the documentary is as follows: bootleg tapes of pissed-off potty mouthed Jack Rebney go viral on YouTube, though no one has any clue who Jack Rebney actually is. The brilliant filmmaker embarks on a quest to find this son-of-a-bitch, and hilarity and heart-wrenching sadness ensues. I wept, and I think the BF even got a little choked up. It’s funny as hell and incredibly sweet. Unless you have an aversion to the F-word, you’ll fall head over heels for Jack Rebney, the Winnebago Man.
